The Luttrell Psalter

One of the greatest joys of our heritage must be the Luttrell Psalter. It was made in the early part of the C14th, commissioned by Sir Geoffrey Luttrell who owned considerable estates in Lincolnshire. Instead of going for what might be thought of as a more standard book of Psalms, he has chosen to have his decorated with the teeming life of rural Lincolnshire. From his book we learn how daily life was conducted from farming and cooking scenes to the man who delivered water. Monsters also romp cheerfully, mixed in with saints and biblical stories. The Luttrell Psalter doesn’t quite stand alone; comparisons can be made with other books, but the artists’ sense of the ridiculous and keen eye for colour and detail is second to none.
